How Do Carpet Beetles Look & Behave? What Are The Risks?

The more you know about a pest, the better. There are multiple kinds of carpet beetles in the city. The majority are 0.04 to 0.15 of an inch long and they all have wings. The “black” species has a reddish-brown tint, short hairs, two antennas, and six legs. While the furniture subgroup is also black colored, they have distinctive yellow and white mottling. “Varied” types are the most common. Their black bodies are covered with beige, yellow, and white markings. All of these pests gravitate to light sources, such as windows and lamps, so look out for them there.

Carpet beetle larvae are black or brown and have rounded bodies that are elongated. Some have noticeable brown barbed hairs. The larvae are the ones that damage to possessions. They munch on the following items:

  • Clothes

  • Upholstery

  • Bedding

  • Rugs

  • Felt

  • Silk

  • Wool

  • Leather

  • Hair

  • Stored goods

  • Pollen, plants, and seeds

  • Dead bugs and animal bi-products

  • And more

Resist the urge to touch carpet beetle larvae directly; you could experience skin irritation or a rash outbreak. The result will appear patchy and similar to bed bug bites. If you see larvae or find their shed skins on surfaces, you certainly have an infestation. Adult beetles fly into homes and businesses through open doors and windows. Alternatively, residents might accidentally bring them inside with items they’ll release eggs in fabrics, rugs, and furniture. Primary hubs include cupboards, closets, and storage areas. Spaces that are messy and aren’t routinely cleaned are susceptible to repeat breeding cycles.

How Can Carpet Beetles Be Prevented?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for a carpet beetle infestation to occur. Further, these pests can go under your radar for some time. They are quiet and dainty creatures that don’t bring attention to themselves. Another advantage they have is that folks rarely inspect the items these insects infest. When holes or tears are discovered, it’s assumed an object has just aged. This all in mind, you have to be  vigilant about prevention:

  • Wash and vacuum floor rugs, upholstery, and fabrics frequently.

  • Examine second-hand furniture and plants prior to use.

  • Seal gaps near windows, screens, and doors.

  • Make sure door sweeps are intact.

  • Properly store fabrics; you can try plastic containers or compressed bags.

  • Call Romney Pest Control if you have critters carpet beetles eat.
